Nine sailors were reported missing after a cargo ship sank near Taiwan due to bad weather. Typhoon Gaemi was approaching mainland China, causing disruptions and leading to rescue operations for the missing sailors.
The typhoon, equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane, caused significant damage in Taiwan, resulting in casualties and injuries. Flooding was widespread in southern Taiwan, affecting cities like Kaohsiung and Tainan.
In addition to the maritime incident, a Tanzanian cargo ship sank near Kaohsiung, prompting a rescue mission for crew members from Myanmar. The cyclone’s remnants complicated efforts to prevent fuel oil spillage from a tanker in the area.
As the storm moved towards mainland China, precautions were taken in Fujian province, including closures of schools and businesses. Evacuations were also underway in coastal provinces as the typhoon was expected to bring heavy rainfall across China.
Furthermore, the typhoon impacted islands in Japan’s Yaeyama region, with warnings of potential destruction of houses and risks of mudslides and flooding. Residents were advised to prepare for severe weather conditions.In Taiwan, certain local weather stations had measured over four feet of rainfall from Typhoon Gaemi by Thursday afternoon. The Central Weather Bureau of the island projected that the storm could bring a total of more than seven feet of rainfall.
As of Wednesday, more than 700,000 electricity customers in Taiwan had encountered power outages, as reported by Taipower, a government-owned utility company. By Thursday afternoon, approximately 13 percent of these customers were still without power.
A spokesperson for the world’s leading manufacturer of advanced computer chips stated that the company had not experienced any impact from the storm.
